OMG what a wreck - it would be good to know which type of plane that was, but ...
Well the propeller is at the lower left, and the engine is visible. There is a holed plate also at the lower left, but i do not know which french plane had such a plate. Anyone ?

Greetings,
Catfish

P.S: you posted a lot of interesting photos, but it is a bit much at a time

It just says "Shot down french plane", and the date. Nothing more to gather from that, apart from the date.

Greetings,
Catfish

It appears to have a v-type engine (which doesn't look like a Hisso to me) and yet there seems to be too little structure remaining for it to be a Breguet 14; a Voisin maybe? Ransom

Hi,

I don't wish to hazard a guess at this time, but just FYI:

Just because the contemporary caption says a "French aircraft", doesn't ensure that it was. It may well have been British. Ground troops knew practically nothing about enemy aircraft national markings or aircraft types. There are many original, contemporary German photo captions in albums that misidentify French aircraft as "English", and vice-versa. Even aviation personnel were not immune from such captioning errors. The fact that British airmen frequently flew such French aircraft as Nieuports, Spads, Morane-Saulniers, etc, and the French sometimes flew Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutters added to the confusion.

If by "Thiacourt" the writer meant "Thiaucourt" then it seems to me the plane stands a better chance of being French than British, tho your point about potential mis-identification is well taken. Ransom

Arrow 16.11.1917 losses and claims

Hello!

The Jasta War Chonology lists only two claims for this day:

Lt. Armbrecht of Jasta 1, 1 balloon, NE Treviso

Vfw R. Treptow of Jasta 25, 1 Arvo, Dedebal, 12:15

So it seems that Flak or a 2-seater unit could have shot down this aircraft.

The French Air Service War Chonology lists only two losses for this day:

MdL Canivet + Sol Celles of AR 19, flying a Dorand AR 1 / AR 2, injured

S/Lt Meunier of Br 7, flying a Breguet 14, injured

In both cases the crew was only injured. Is it possible that the crew crash-landed the aircraft and destroyed it before they were captured?

Just an idea.

.
