McEwen claimed at least 20 scouts during his stay in Italy (16 Albatrosses and four Bergs), but if the painting shows the prelude to the machine going down in flames we can narrow this down to two dates:
on 30 December 1917 he claimed an Albatros scout in flames north-east of Conegliano
on 2 May 1918 he claimed an Albatros scout in flames over Valdobbiadene.
Simply going on date, I would suspect that this depicts McEwen's victory over Vzfw Ludwig Gaim of Jasta 39 who was shot down and wounded on 30 Decmeber 1917.
