Esteemed forum members;

BACKGROUND: I am currently engaged in researching the military aviation histories of the Baltic States from 1914-1945. As may be recalled, a number of German military a/c were used by the Air Forces of all three Baltic States during the interwar era, some of their WW1 vintage a/c lasting as trainers up to 1939/40.

A number of German a/c were seized between 1918-1920 as Baltic ground forces overran German or German Landeswehr positions. Others were shot down, or damaged by groundfire to the point where the pilot had to make a landing - and at that time, Baltic ground troops seized the a/c in question. Lithuania also purchased a number of German war surplus a/c - in addition to those it seized from German and Landeswehr forces.

For example, on 06 June 1919, Estonian ground troops shot down a German Halberstadt CL.V, (Aviatik) 6905/18, near Narva. This a/c still retained its German war time Balkenkreuze at the time of capture - and was painted with Lozenges on all surfaces. Similarly, Latvian ground forces captured a German Hannover CL.IIIA, 7015/18 - this airplane was however marked in the white squares of the Landeswehr Air Force - and it too was painted in Lozenge patters on all surface areas at the time of its capture. This a/c was then assigned to the Latvian Air Force, who only partially blocked out the Landeswehr's white squares with the Latvian fire-cross roundel and painted the a/c in dark green. It need be noted that the Latvians also built a replica Hannover CL.III - and displayed it at a Riga air-show.

MY QUESTION: As I am doing my own color renderings for my research project, I would like to herewith inquire, if someone with more knowledge than I on German Lozenge colors could review my renderings and advise me as to any corrective actions I might need to make. As can be imagined, I am encoutering some challenges re the correct colors to use - or at least colors which will place me "in the right ballpark".

Thank you kindly in advance for any/all assistance efforts, even if only to point me in the right direction.

Regards;

Arvo L. V.

It's a 5color-loz replica made after original samples from Halberstadt C IVs. Contact me off-list for a sample of the undersides.

And be aware: Those pics give you a not the absolute truth. Please check the archive of this forum, there were several discussions on this theme already.

Esteemed Hans;

Thank you kindly re your reply. Your photographs show me that my present Lozenge color selection on my renderings are not correct - and I shall strive to correct them to bring them more into line with your presented source material. Per your query, yes, I did look at the archives...I perhaps did not enter the best key words in the search box or I did not go back far enough in the historical postings.

Also, thank you kindly for allowing me to contact you off line. I plan to take advantage of this (smile) - and I will send you some samples of the renderings I am preparing for my project for your consideration.

Hochachtungsvoll;
