Wrecked Pfalz Triplane Photo

Hello All,

Currently on ebay at:

http://www.ebay.de/itm/Original-Foto...kAAOSwKtVWt0jh

is a photograph of a wrecked Pfalz Triplane. The wing strut shows a number 224.Is this 224/17 or is the number on the strut not related to the serial number?

Regards,

Clint

I think it,s a production number but I,m not sure. There seems to be a another wheel just aft of the cockpit, from a collision with another aircraft ?

Jack Herris' book "Pfalz Aircraft of WWI" has a good side view of "DR.I 222/17" in use with Jasta 73.
The military serial number "222" is repeated on the strut in the same location as the "224" in this photo of a crashed DR.I, so it's fair to assume that the picture in question indeed shows "DR.I 224/17".

The "R" further up the strut informs the ground crew that this is the right hand interplane strut.

Hi Sator,

Thanks for the reply. Not sure if the other wheel is there as the result of a collision or whether the aircraft has just been scrapped. I would be interested if anyone has any information on the fate of 224/17.

As you'll mote from the line above I still believe that the aircraft is 224/17 having subsequently compared the number on the strut with a photo of 222/17 in Jack Herris Pfalz Aircraft of WW.I P68 (Flying Press Edition). 222/17 has the same type of number on the strut and the serial in full on the fuselage.

Regards.
