Previous challenges here: http://members.shaw.ca/flyingaces/br.crashfiles/

THE RULES:

1) All aircraft are of the 1914-18 period (Must have left the ground during this period).
2) The score board, link and rules must be copied to the beginning of each thread, so that we know where we are. The score board and the correct answer to the challenge must also be placed at end of each thread.
3) All "ACES" with a score of 5.0 or higher must obey the 3.0 hour handicap. All others with a score of ZERO to 4.99 may start immediately, if not sooner! Offenders will be dealt with severely!
4) To be eligible for correct ID an answer should include at least one characteristic of the aircraft that helped in it's identification. 'Should' becomes 'must' once a score of 25 is reached.
5) And whoever wins this challenge will have to provide a new one! If this can not be done for any reason, please PM Breguet and he will take over as host!
6) If an ace gives the correct answer too early, the challenge is over, he gets no point but has to post the next challenge. In lieu of the fact that the "novices" have in effect been "cheated" of their "exclusive" time that next post should be a relatively easy one. Anyone repeating the correct answer at the right time gets neither a point nor the right to post the next challenge.
7) The final arbitrator of all things to do with the "rules" is Breguet. In cases where the arbitrator's game answer is in question the decision rests with the current leader of the table.

Bonjour

I will not be surprised whether it's fokker DVII (ALB) 611/18 of Lieutnant Harbers
jasta 73

http://www.wingnutwings.com/ww/produ...tid=3079&cat=1

Look here explanation of Greg van

http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=38187
"However, the central D.VII on the cover is based on Fokker D.VII (Alb) 611/18, which was actually a Jasta 73 machine. When first published in Windsock Datafile No. 9, the photo of the crashed 611/18 was tentatively labeled as a Jasta 6 aircraft, and with good reason; the black and white stripes on the tailplane and nose do indeed resemble the unit markings of Jasta 6. However, as I explained on pages 43-44 of Fokker D.VII Anthology 3, those b/w stripes were actually personal markings in this case, and the white ribbon wrapped spirally around the fuselage was actually the Staffel marking of Jasta 73. D.VII (Alb) 611/18 was reportedly crashed by Uffz. Harbers of Jasta 73. Ray Rimell did a wonderful color profile of this same aircraft, which appeared on p. 33 of Anthology 3."

Here is a photo of Rudolf Harbers
http://www.buddecke.de/faa243.htm
The photo of the challenge can be seen in Fokker DVII Anthology 3 page 43
and in WDF N° 9 page 10
The personnal marking of Harbers was b/w stripes on nose and tail, the reason why
First one thought it was a Fokker Jasta of 6

About the Lego aircraft, look here full explanations

The first crash photo is the famous LEG C.IIa, a development of the LEG C.I from the Srping of 1915. It's a little known fact that this German two seater is nearly a direct copy of a captured French "L'Egg 3-bis". This remarkable airplane was developed in secret during the 1914 Easter holiday. It had apparently been hidden from the children and carried the code-name l'Ouef, before being marshalled into service as the "L'Egg 3" sporting a wild paint scheme is a left over from the Easter project. The subsequent development of the 3-bis included a camera portal internal to the aircraft. This camera, developed by the Benedict Co., often led to the amusing unofficial designation "L'Egg Benedict" for the 3-bis.

The defining characteristics are the aircaft on it's back - sometimes called the "Over Easy" manuever by early French 'L'Egg' pilots, - the distinctive lack of landing gear (which necessitated an overly powerful engine for taxiing), the squared off empennage, the advanced flat-top and bottom airfoil used exclusively by this design and the inverted dimples on all esposed surfaces.

One of the developers of this inverted-dimple design was a dyslexic golfer who tried to adapt the concave dimple design of the golf ball to aerodynamic use and came up with the reversed dimpling characteristic of this design.

This crashed German LEG C.IIa is a well published photo of a crash by Leutnant von Yolk while the aircraft was still in it's protoype form. Interestingly, the gray wings were a later attempt to camofaluge the originally all white and yellow "L'Egg" and adopted by the Germans for use on the LEG C.IIa. Much of the original yellow and white paint is still visible on this crashed airplane.

The LEG C.IIa saw limited use and was subsequently replaced by the larger, more powerful "Omelet C.V".

And Yes, I believe Bruno is correct about the Fokker... but the real ID required here was the "LEG C.IIa".

Mike

Good Job Bruno!

I concur and also believe that RULE #4 has been fancified to my satisfication thoroughly with your correct identification of the Manufacturer, S/N, & Pilot.

Also the fact that you have resourced Greg van's historical research on this machine and it's circumstances.

Mike! I'm speechless after reading your your impeccable research that shows your well known high standard of thoroughness and keen eye for detail.

As usual, I am concluding this challenge with a better knowledge of WK.1 Flugzeug than I started with.

A very special Vielen Dank to our very own Greg van Wyngarden for supplying this image which I believe is from his personal archive via Wing~Nut Wings and the net.
I googled "ALMOST FUBAR FOKKER D.VII WINGED WREX" and this was the first image that popped!

Points to follow.... Mike O'Neal is very welcome to submit the next challenge if you are game. Otherwise, I know that Bruno is more than capable of fulfilling this requirement.

Vielen Dank an alle die
Jungen und Mädchen für Spiel hier an der 950 Nummer BCFC!

For excellent participation, above and beyond the call of duty, I award One Point Each to Bruno and Mike aka "Froggy" & "ONEALM".
The Host of the next BCFC #951 to be determined by toss of the coin, a traditional duel with choice or weapons (Single Shot Black Powder!), or whomever chimes in here first with such desire.

Fokker D.VII (Alb.) 611/18 of Jasta 73

Here's the untouched image, before I altered it to make this challenge more difficult.

Low S/N, Early Exhaust Location, and Lack of Cooling Louver/Vents show this to be an early version out of the Factory Albatros.
