I am researching the career of a DH9a pilot, Lt. Frank Carpenter, 98 Squadron, Royal Air Force. *He was taken prisoner on 9th August 1918 but before then his observers claimed two victories - one Dr.1 OOC on 9th July and a Halberstadt destroyed on 8th August. *The latter was seen to crash by Carpenter so it sounds a little more reliable than the OOC.

I have the Grub Street reference works and there are several possible candidates for the 8th August victory (I'm discounting the OOC claim) but is there any way I could confirm which of the German casualties listed were flying a Halberstadt (if any)?

Thanks for your help.

Cheers,

Jim

Hi Jim

It is a bit difficult to say "who got who" this Day because of the tremendous Air fighting in Somme area.
The Day would be ended as the most successful Day in the War for the German Air Force....!

However around 10 German a/c were lost in the Somme area due aerial action(incl walk away crashes)
The problem is(as always) that only the British claimed over 50 e/a destroyed in the same area...

The German opponents in this case was probably Schlasta flyers. For example Schlasta 21 lost one crew at Marcelcave(no time given)

Sorry not much help
Gunnar
