"WW1 GERMAN 36 VICTORY ACES DOCUMENT" on eBay

An unusual (I think!) and interesting item for sale on eBay! Anyone here have the necessary deep pockets, and interest, to acquire this?

Other WW1 military items also available from this seller.

Seems like a very high price for something with no provenance and no information on how it was obtained from his family who I would expect would have had little interest in letting it go. Also, it seems to be dated 3 months after his being shot down which may be okay, but it seems like a long time for his commanding officer who was his good friend to get around to having this prepared and sent to his family. It may be fine, but there are too many questions for me.

I agree with Jim, "Beware".

If, in fact, it is genuine, it belongs in an archive. I wonder how it came into private hands?

Dealer is a very reputable guy. Apply to him personally for provenance. Rare item!

The fifth and last pics show an added text in French ("36 victoires" and below "Pour le mérite"). So it probably went through French hands.

But you are right: this paper, if original, belongs to archives.

It could be real but without some really serious provenance and not just a seller's reputation, it would be a total throw of the dice with uncertain future commercial value since the new buyer would be even further from whatever the source may have originally been.

Excellent point, Jim. Just as with a piece if artwork, there should be verifiable "paperwork" documents, decribing how the historic document, normally found in the fliers's service records (now usually in an archive), came into "public" hands.
