baldeagle,
I don't think so. While it is certainly an early compass it may nautical origins which has always been Plath's main business.
I have two WW1 Plath compasses, one with gimbal, and both have the 'Armee Kompass III' designation on them which I understand defines the military credentials so I doubt that this unit came from a 'shot down aeroplane' as claimed in the e-bay auction.
This style of 'authentication' drives me nuts. 'Experts' found via a search engine with no identification as to who they are etc. doesn't seem to provide very rigorous provenance.
BTW, the Plath Armee Kompass III does not fit the Bamburg gimbal being slightly to wide for a comfortable fit.
Regards
John
