I am hoping to win this Item.
I cannot get any more of the compass bowls to make my reproduction compasses. If I get this one, I was talking to Vet about using it as a template to make the missing compass parts.

Jeff,
I have one of these Plath compasses. It is not a Bamberg as inferred in the listing and it does not fit into your gimbal mount. Too large in diameter.

John

John, thanks for the heads up.
The original in Achim's drawings show the bowl to be 110mm (4.33") while this one on ebay says the housing is 5" so I was hoping this guy's measurements were just an estimate.

Interesting to note which of the 2 compass cards you had made up they used!

I was out bid on the aution ... but after your input I was happy to let it go.
I will just have to stay on the hunt for the correct size!

Plath Dimensions vs Vet Bamberg Compass Mount
As above, my Plath is slightly larger than the dimensions of Vet's mount. It is also an air, not fluid, mount of the compass card.
Is it possible this is a period, but not aviation, compass?

Interesting question, drrivah.
What was the fluid used in the aircraft compasses?

Sitting in an airport lounge so unable to access photos. Your compass looks like mine, but the card is different and clearly states 'Armee Kompass III'. The unit I have has the gimbal mount which has wiring terminals for the light and no visible facility for corrector magnets.
My conclusion is that it was for a larger, night aircraft such as a bomber. I started my D VII project around one small part. Perhaps I should (with Jeff's help) build a Staaken so that the compass has some purpose.
Regards
John

I know in my study of the compass that the fluid was to dampen vibrations from the aircraft.
Also, the compass card on the compass wasn't too busy. Trying to read the compass when it was mounted on the floor (which can be kinda dark) and there were too many numbers too close together, it can get hard to read. Having a number on every 30 degrees makes for a quicker cross check in the cockpit.
