Breguet's Aircraft Challenge 1091

Here is Challenge number 1091. Hopefully it is easy enough for the not-yet-aces to score with a correct answer before the 5 or higher points aces who must endure 12 hour waiting time before they are allowed to pounce on it from out of the sun. Laissez aller, mes amis! (begin the attack, my friends)

Jim

Previous: Aeroplanes 1914 - 1918* -* Breguet's Aircraft Challenge* --

The Rules:

1. The thread title must be "Breguet's Aircraft ID Challenge #......"
2. The score board, link and rules must be copied to the beginning of each thread, so that we know where we are. The score board and the correct answer to the challenge must also be placed at end of each thread.
3. The completed aircraft must have been either; designed, built or have left the ground during the '14-'18 period and be identifiable by the poster.
4. The photo must show the whole aircraft - from whatever angle, or at least 2 views of a 3 view drawing (photo by preference).
5. Challenges which depict a machine already earlier presented are disqualified (always check the list at Aeroplanes 1914 - 1918* -* Breguet's Aircraft Challenge* -- when in doubt !) and the poster re-post within the same thread, the 12hours handicap beginning from that point.
6. If there is any doubt as to the eligibility of an aircraft for the challenge details should be PM'd to Breguet BEFORE the aircraft is submitted.
7. Once someone has got 5 correct answers under their belt they become an ACE. Once they become an ACE they must wait 12hrs after the posting of the new challenge before they can post an answer.
8. To be eligible for correct ID an answer must include at least one characteristic of the aircraft that helped in its identification.
9. The first person to ID the challenge correctly gets to post the next challenge. If this can not be done for any reason Breguet himself will post the next challenge.
10. If an ace gives the correct answer too early, the challenge is over, he gets no point but has to post the next one. In lieu of the fact that the "novices" have in effect been "cheated" of their "exclusive" time that next post should be a relatively easy one. Anyone repeating the correct answer at the right time gets neither a point nor the right to post the next challenge.
11. The final arbiter in relation to questions about the rules is BREGUET

Based on the markings, streamlined nose and complex undercarriage, I believe that this twin-engined biplane is the Caudron R. 11.

Twin engine biplane with obvious Caudron R-style tail and fuselage but no nose wheel – Caudron R. 11.

Both Dave and Rbailey are correct, but Dave was seconds quicker with the first response so he gets the point and the privilege of creating Challenge No. 1092.

This is a French Caudron R.11 which first flew in March, 1917 and entered service in February, 1918. By the end of the war 370 of them were built and were flying in 6 different Escadrilles including R.46. They were powered by two 215 horsepower eight-cylinder water-cooled Hisso engines. They had a crew of 3 with a pilot and two gunners - one in the bow and one facing aft, were armed with five 7.7mm Lewis machine guns (two forward, two aft, and one forward aiming down and rearwards. They could carry a small bomb load of 265 pounds. Initially built for reconnaissance or light bombing they were soon found to be best suited as fighter escorts for bombers. They had a wingspan of almost 59 feet with a design ceiling of 19,500 feet, speed of 114 miles per hour and endurance of 3 hours.

Also note that this R11 machines have One less bay in the wings cellule ( each side) , than the earlier R4 machines , and No nose wheel .
This R11 being designed by Gaston Caudron .

The R4 was recently the subject of Crashfile # 710 very recently & a good photo is shown there .

R.xi

I thought that the US R.11 biplanes were not operational.

Can anyone confirm if they flew missions?

Hi Collin. Are you saying that the French gave or sold some of their Caudron R.11 aircraft to the US? This was a very operational aircraft for the French.
