The rules: Aeroplanes 1914 - 1918* -* Breguet's Aircraft Challenge* --

1. The thread title must be "Breguet's Aircraft ID Challenge #......"
2. The score board, link and rules must be copied to the beginning of each thread, so that we know where we are. The score board and the correct answer to the challenge must also be placed at end of each thread.
3. The completed aircraft must have been either; designed, built or have left the ground during the '14-'18 period and be identifiable by the poster.
4. The photo must show the whole aircraft - from whatever angle, or at least 2 views of a 3 view drawing (photo by preference).
5. Challenges which depict a machine already earlier presented are disqualified (always check the list at Aeroplanes 1914 - 1918* -* Breguet's Aircraft Challenge* -- when in doubt !) and the poster re-post within the same thread, the 12hours handicap beginning from that point.
6. If there is any doubt as to the eligibility of an aircraft for the challenge details should be PM'd to Breguet BEFORE the aircraft is submitted.
7. Once someone has got 5 correct answers under their belt they become an ACE. Once they become an ACE they must wait 12hrs after the posting of the new challenge before they can post an answer.
8. To be eligible for correct ID an answer must include at least one characteristic of the aircraft that helped in its identification.
9. The first person to ID the challenge correctly gets to post the next challenge. If this can not be done for any reason Breguet himself will post the next challenge.
10. If an ace gives the correct answer too early, the challenge is over, he gets no point but has to post the next one. In lieu of the fact that the "novices" have in effect been "cheated" of their "exclusive" time that next post should be a relatively easy one. Anyone repeating the correct answer at the right time gets neither a point nor the right to post the next challenge.
11. The final arbiter in relation to questions about the rules is BREGUET.

I knew full well I'd never get up early enough to get this challenge, but I did prepare information to add.

F.2 Città di Milano
Built in 1912 by Ing. Forlanini and by Captain Cesare Dal Fabbro, with funds raised from a public subscription to provide an airship to the Regio Esercito (Royal Army). Specifications: length 72 m, diameter 18 m, volume 11,500 m³ (also reported to be 12,000 m³); two Isotta Fraschini engines of 85 hp driving two counter-rotating three-bladed propellers with a diameter of 4.20 m; speed 64 km/h. Like the previous Forlanini airship, this too had a rigid frame incorporated with the lower part of the envelope. For safety all the material was treated with a fire suppressant and the envelope was double-skinned. The F.2 was short-lived: first flown on August 17, 1913, and making a total of 43 ascensions, it was destroyed in a fire on April 9, 1914 near Cantù in the province of Como.

Quote:
[Enrico Forlanini] constructed a second and improved dirigible by 1912, called Citta de Milano. The circumstances attending the loss of the Forlanini airship Citta da Milano showed what great risks were run by any gas-supported aerostat in close proximity to even the glowing ends of cigars or cigarettes. The career of this vessel had, up to the time of the mishap which destroyed it, been singularly free from accident, and this fact and the equally successful career of its predecessor, the Leonardo da Vinci, tend to show that under normal circumstances the Forlanini is an excellent and safe type, and well worth further experiment, inasmuch as the design of the airship had nothing whatever to do with the disaster, whereas in the case of the last Zeppelin destroyed by fire in peace time, the accident was, as far as we know, entirely due to the design, which permitted an accumulation of gas from leakage in close proximity to the engines.

The loss of the Citta da Milano on 09 April 1914 was due simply and solely to the crass stupidity of the peasants and others who assembled to watch the proceedings when, in order to repair a leaky valve, it was brought to the ground in the course of a cruise, in charge of a perfectly competent crew, the well-known Major Del Fabbro, of the Italian Airservice, being also on board. The vessel was moored to the ground and to some trees with both hemp and steel ropes, the crew being assisted by men belonging to a farm near which the descent had been made, and expert assistance was sent for. Before the necessary repairs could be made to the valve, the ropes gave way and the airship was driven for about 170 yards against some mulberry trees. She was again moored, and the commanding officer decided to deflate the bag. A crowd of peasants gathered to watch the operations. The soldiers could not drive them back. Indeed, they could not be even made to give up smoking. As the deflated bag fell over towards the crowd on the left side, several explosions followed hard on one another. A great blast of blue flame shot out from the airship, and passing away left behind nothing but a twisted mass of framework and a struggling body of human beings. About eighty people were more or less seriously injured.

It was intended for the F.3 to be sold to the British government, however because of the outbreak of WWI the airship was retained by Italy. (see attached British cigarette card showing the F.2)

Cheers
