Nieuport 28 lower wing cocard question

Hello fellow forumites,

I apologize for all the Nieuport 28 questions lately, but here's another one. Hamady's book on the subject indicates that later model Nieuport 28s had the cocardes on the upper wing moved inboard - does anyone know if the same thing was done on the lower wing cocardes in that same serial number range? Thanks for any help out there.

I think I found it

I think I found my own answer. For anyone who is interested, on page 90 of Hamady's "The Nieuport 28: America's First Fighter" there is a picture of a later serial numbered 28, in this case I think it looks like N6287. Looking to the right on the lower wing behind the two service members one can see the lower cocard. The struts appear to intersect the lower wing about halfway through the inboard side of the outer ring on the cocard. Looking at the pictures of 95th Aero Nieuport 28s from early in the serial number range taxiing on the ground (when cocards were still on the underside of the upper wings as well), the later cocards do appear to have been moved inboard - the earlier ones are entirely outboard from the struts). I hope this might be of interest to a few folks.

Hi there...

I dont have the book your talking about but Jon Guttman states in the DataFile that the change in roundels took place at N6201. The colors were changed to AEF markings on the roundels and rudder stripes, also at this time the roundels on the bottom of the upper wings were dropped. He doesnt mention a specific date nor whether they were moved inward.

The only photos I've seen of the roundels being moved inward are on post armistice N.28s. The white star over blue type at that. Check out the Navy N.28s..they show the roundels in the location you mention above.

hth...
