Udet's SSWDIII wings

Hello, All.
I'm doing Udet's SSW. Most reports say that the fuselage and struts were painted red, and the wings originally in lozenge. Dan-San says the wings were red as well, both upper and lower surfaces. There are no photos that show the camo pattern. My question is involves the coverage of the red paint. As noted on a number of machines overpainted red, the paint had a transluscent quality, allowing factory finish to show under the overcoat. If the lozenge fabric on 8350/17 was overpainted red, would the pattern show beneath?

Hi,

I would be very surprised if the pattern did not show through, at least to a degree, from photographs and original fabric samples I have seen.

Looking at the photos of this aircraft in Windsock's "Richthofen's Flying Circus" by GVW I think Dan san has it correct, the bottom wing top side looks to be a light color matching the fuselage (red) with a few dark polygons showing through, so the red is opaque enough that only the darkest color shows through. The way I finished mine was to do the fuselage red, then the wings in lozenge. To finish it off I used a wide soft brush to overpaint some thinned down red on the wings. When it dried I could see the darker polygons faintly but you have to look hard. Looks good to me!

Thank you, gentlemen. Those were my thoughts, exactly. I don't think I own that Flying Circus book, although I'd have to check. I can't remember what is stuffed in the shelf! The kit decals in the Roden 1/32 kit have iffy colors, so I really would like them to be red. I'll try your method, Dave.

Dave Calhoun : Central Powers Model Images

Here is a link to some photos, it's hard to see the dark ozenges look like faint spots on the photo but they are there.
