Q: On Udet's DR-1 ...

... I know the basic DR-1 he flew was the standard factory streaked green finish. When the plane was personalize in the field with the diagonal strips on the top wing, outer plane struts and back half of the fuselage, my question is what color was used between the white strips? And was the cowling Black or ???

His DVII F 4400/18, with the same paint scheme ( as stated by the Memorial Flight museums DVII ) used Fokker green and white. May this be the same on his DR1?

I did a search here, did not find any conclusion. Mr. Abbott, can you help me?

Just curious, thanks.

Never be sorry...they think its fear. You are right though there are several schools of thought on the topic. The popular version is black and white. This was one of at least two "Dr.I" triplanes that he flew. The other seems to be factory standard with Jasta 4 light blue tail (?) and or a chevron on the horizontal tail unit and "LO!" on the fuselage sides.

My Gallery
Udet's DR.I colors.

WomenFly2:
I like your monicker! Udet's triplane was red and light blue stripes. You will hear a large houl from the oppostion on this. They are stuck on what Kirschstein's colors of black and white. Whatever the dark color was , the light color on Udet's DR.I was not white, it was light blue! White does not contrast with white. The light stripe is in contrast with the white border of the fuselage cross and the white rudder.
Gentlemen I will not waste my time trying to change your minds.
Blue skies,
Dan-San

WF2- Udet flew at least three Dr.Is with JG I. One with Jasta 11 before he came to Jasta 4 as commander, and two with Jasta 4. The aircraft Dan-San refers to was heavily damaged when its Oberursel Ur.II came apart in flight and effectively destroyed the whole front end of the aircraft.

The color scheme of the damaged aircraft with the stripes, believed to be 586/17, is well covered in other threads, as you have seen. An aerial photo of Udet's Jasta 11 Dr.I shows white chevrons on the horizontal stabilzer like many of his other aircraft. One of MvR's red Dr.Is is visible in this shot as well. It is contained in a German book by author Jorg Muckler.

Do not be afraid to bring up anything here on the Forum. We all develop pretty thick skins over our particular pet rocks.

Hi WF2.

You can get a pretty good match for the red colour by using black, and try a slightly off white for the sky blue...

Regards.

Bucky.

You misconstrue my words madam...I was merely saying that in my opinion Udet's stripey triplane was black & white, not red and blue.

Sorry if I offended you.

Regards.

Bucky.
