Salute! Saludo! Gruß! Salut! Saluto! saudação! from RB3D Recruiting
Officers

Come fly the skies of WW1, in Red Baron 3D!
When men were made of steel and planes were made of wood!
Hear your opponent grunt if wounded or scream if you shoot him in the head.
Have your wings pop of if you over stress them, black out if too many G's
are pulled, deal with gun jams, all the while looking at your opponent from
mere feet away. Learn to take advantage of each planes strengths or
weaknesses and how to exploit your enemies. Whether you live or die an
honorable Salute is given.

Brief history
Red Baron a WW1 flight simulation that has been around since 1992 RB, 1995
RBII, 1998 RB3D.

Today
There are approximately 700 players who play RB3D in over 50 squads? On
average you will find 30 to 50 players online at any time of the day or
night from all nations and back grounds, as well as 30-40 servers of all
descriptions and FM's. You can either join a squad or fly as an independent.

For best graphics it is best to have a voodoo card. Either direct or by
using a voodoo 2 with SLI patch through cable. But it works fine in OpenGL
or Direct draw, just the graphics are a bit poor until you install the
terrain patches.
There are some glide wrappers out there which are being improved each day.
This one is about 99% perfected.

What an absolutely top post! Thanks a lot for taking the time to do this for us. I've downloaded and installed the glide patch and the effect on the graphics, already improved manyfold by the PL patch, is dramatic. It has crashed to desktop a couple of times but the download site has tweaking instructions designed to sort that out, assuming that it isn't caused by my running WinMX at the same time which may well be the case.

Thanks a zillion.

Blast from the past seeing a lot of those old plane skins. My favourite I did was the Van Gogh Sunflowers Albatros with the Blue fuselage and Golden Sunflower wings. I was the envy of Jasta Boelcke when I flew that thing ;)

The old Art Attack site is long gone destroyed by the Xoom/NBCi days of the web. I still have the site and all its files though backed up locally. IIRC I was one of the first few to put the really wild skins on those aircraft and the skins got wilder from there on in. I recall there was a Finnish bloke making some pretty wild aircraft skins as well.

I have RB3D on my old machine with the Voodoo card but havent played it in ages. It is a dual boot (Linux) with Win98 kept on it purely for RB3D. I think I might fire it up.

I will stick it up on the web somewhere for you, they were hot stuff in 1998, now they are antique curio's. I doubt you will find anything new in them...

Thank you, thank you thank you!!

Having read this thread I decided to have a go at installing RB onto Win2k. It didn't work. I then downloaded the 3D upgrades and a patch and it worked perfectly. I then downloaded the glide patch and the Promised Land stuff and, well, TREES!

My graphics cards have never supported Glide and I have never seen trees before!

Having said that I don't find the glide wrapper stable and have had the machine lock up on several occasions, but it will do that with other games too (e.g CFS3). It also makes quite a hit on the frame rate (particularly near airfields). However even running with DirectDraw(?) the Promised land stuff is just amazing! I now have all of the attractions of the RB campaign play and damage representation together with some great looking planes. Make that superb, marvellous, wire braced, curvy, rotating engined, realistic looking planes.

Promised Land. Go get it!

Richard

Thank you, thank you, thank you....

Glad it was of some use. As for the Glidos (Open Glide) Wrapper there are quite a few tweaks that you can do to help FPS Alt F.

Turn off sun Glare SP
Limit chat buffer and increase chat scroll. Right Click screen.
Also there is a realism thing over at Promised Land which removes all Text prompts

Bunch of others you'll have to do searchs over at WOV or SWWisa

I've actually been looking for a new vid card because some of the pics I've seen with Glidos actually look better than my V5500.

As for FPS anything over 50 really makes no difference and with some planes can actually be worse.
