I have just got some of the white metal pilots Stephen mentioned recently and wanted to paint one in a black leather coat. I thought a very dark blue with black in the creases and dark grey for the highlights, then perhaps a gentle dry brush with satin varnish to give it a slight sheen?
How would any of our Grand Masters tackle this little project? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
You've pretty much got the idea Ginge, except I would suggest that all three colours be based on a common blue-black. A blue-black and white with a tiny amout of orange in it are my favoured alternatives to a pure black or a pure white, which IMO should be avoided at all costs. Not sure about a black leather flying coat though. Seems a bit Hunnish to me.
He is Hunnish, very Hunnish, getting it right in the neck as usual. He will be depicted being frog marched away, with a bayonet up his arse, from a downed Hun bus by a grinning Tommy.
ps Peter, what effect does the dash of orange in the mix have on the finished look, that's a new one on me?

Ginge, it's not realy possible to tone down white as white doesn't have a tone, but I have found that adding a tiny amount of another colour results in a much more realistic look and orange works well for me. Unaldulterated black or white is just too stark on a model. As an illustration, this Pfalz from my site (sorry Ginge, but I do occasionaly stray to the dark side) is orange and dark blue, though you wouldn't think it if you saw it
p.s. Rob makes a good argument for adding a little orange to your leather mix. It makes sense. Wish I'd thought of it
