My Gallery
To all Modelers:
Today I am working on a 6 view water color of Vzfw. Paul Bäumer's Fok. DR.I 204/17. (I have to finish it by Monday) While doing the streaked camouflage I thought I should make those interested, aware, that the streaking pattern on Fokker DR.I and early D.VII aircraft were as uniquely different as finger prints. No two aircraft had the same identical pattern. This uniqueness in patterns becomes a tool in identifying the Fok. DR.I and D.VII. With this tool you can study the patterns in one photo, in my case Bäumer's DR.I 204/17with Iron Crosses in March against other photos taken in May with Balken Crosses and find that it is the same machine in this case the the wing tips have been painted black. In my 96 drawings of Fokker Dr.I aircraft, I have attempted to duplicate the streaking patterns that I have seen in the photographs as closely as possible. So study the photos carefully and duplicate the streaking pattern on your Fok. DR.I model.

Dan,

Isn't it obvious that if you streak there is no camouflage? The colour is, of course, buff.

With apologies to N. Witheld.

Dan-San,
Thanks for the info. How wide a variation is there ? Do we have extremely heavily streaked areas on one plane to virtually none on another plane - same area ? Or are we actaully more talking about variations within a fairly uniform covering ?

Do you know if Fokker laid down any specifications on this or was it up to the individual at the factory ?

Also - are your 96 different color images available online or in a book ? Although my main interest has been in Austrian, French and Russian aircraft my interest in German markings is growing.

Thanks again for the info and your tremendous contributions to the study of aircraft !

Best Wishes,
John G.

If you're interested in German aircraft and their markings, whatever you do...DO NOT GET DAN-SAN'S CATALOG!

He has HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS of markings drawings, ALL of which you will want.

Trust me- I had to start a new category in Quicken for my orders to Dan-San, as it will be taking up a measurable percentage of my income until I have every dang thing he has done, and by then he'll have done more so I'll have to get those, get the picture? Arrgh!

Seriously, his work is great, and besides the incredible informational value (he has what, 20 some-odd 6-views of the LVG CV covering every single variation), but it definitely has an artistic charm all its own, especially the color work.

I now have, what, 70 or 80 markings 3-views of DVII's, with another 40 or 50 on order. All of them are in sleeve protectors in binders, and I really do enjoy just paging through them hour after hour.

My Gallery
John G.:
I believe the paint department had a diagram/ drawing which probably indicated a pattern of sorts, for example fuselage was always dark immediately behind the the engine hood. what makes the camouflage streaking unique is that it is hand applied and with that method of application eliminates any precision of pattern being identical.

I agree. The streaked pattern was applied by hand, & therefore no 2 machines were exactly alike.
