I've seen many photographs of SPAD XIII aircraft with the stencil "Photo" on the side near the cockpit. Does anyone have any details about these. Were they equipped with camera equipment for use as single-seat reconnaisance? Did units strip the equipment out, or were they flown that way?

The Germans and Austro-Hungarians also experimented with this in single-seaters. Quite a few Aviatik C.Is were converted to single-seat photo fighters with the camera mounted behind the seat, the pilot exposing the glass plates with a lever controlled mechanism.

Any details?

Hi
I couldn't find many details, but the panel on which the stencil was written was removable and metal. Inside was a small wood shelf to mount a camera for photo-recon missions.
Obviously there was a small camera aperture on the port bottom of the fuselage.
