Who Killed this KG4 Air Crew?
I have managed to acquire the estate of an Observer from KG4 (photo albums, documents, medals, etc.)
I am very curious to know if at all possible, who shot them down?
Oberleutnant d.R Werner von Bake (Observer)
Leutnant Georg Schultz (Pilot)
This KG4 Crew was WIA near/around Avacourt on May 16,1916.
von Bake was awarded his EK1 on May 17, 1916
von Bake succumbed to his wounds on May 18,1916...... never having worn his EK1. The pilot Schultz succumbed to his wounds on May 19, 1916. Both are listed DOW @ Sivey.
Is there any possibility of getting details of the actual action (from either side/perspective) resulting in their deaths?
Thanks!

Meet OLdR Werner von Bake
I always find portraits like this compelling. The photographer has "drawn-in" both his EK1 and his Observer Badge

The claims I know of on 16 May 1916:
Captain J O Andrews, No 24 Squadron RFC - an AGO bomber and a Fokker E, both out of control near Peronne
Lieutenant G R M Reid and Lieutenant J A Mann, No 25 Squadron RFC - an Aviatik two-seater destroyed near Souchez
2nd Lieutenant Albert Ball, No 11 Squadron RFC - an Albatros two-seater possibly out of control between Givenchy and Beaumont
Lieutenant H B Davey and Corporal L van Schaik, No 25 Squadron RFC - a Fokker E destroyed south of Lille.
I suspect "Sivey" should actually read "Sivry". I'll see if I can match any of the RFC claims with this location.

Hi Stogieman
As KG 4 was serving on the Verdun front, we can rule out any British opponents..!
I also have that they came down within French lines, at least is Schultz reported as MIA...
I dont knew the circumstances, but does anyone knew where Esc C 64 was situated around this time...?
Stogieman, do you happened to knew in which Kasta they served...?

No, but soon I will!
As soon as I get the lot, I'll have a unit. I'm getting his EK1 document and Soldbuch, plus other papers as well.

Caudron Victory 16 May 1916
stogieman- On 16 May 1916 Cpl Gres and Sol Vitecocq of C 64 claimed a forced to land which matches up pretty well with your description. From The French Air Service War Chronology - 1914-1918 by Bailey and Cony. No other details.

Hi Gunnar,
I think the crew belonged to Kasta 22. It would be great if Stogieman could find out more about von Bakes unit... Some sources say that the crew got lost on 15. May, some say it happened on 16. May... Perhaps they were flying by night...

...BTW, I don't think that they came down within the french lines because the crew died in a german Feldlazarett in Sivry. There is a typo in "Casualties of the German Air Service".

Hello
Escadrille C64 was based at Somme-Vesle, that's approx 20kms east of Chalons sur Marne and about 50 kms south-west of Avocourt
