This man gave a lecture about his "Experiences and impressions during 11 month of being a French POW" in January 1917 in Grossenhain/Saxony.
He is reported to be an observer and was allegedly downed on 30 April 1916 near Verdun.

Are there additional biographical data available?

TIA.

Rammjaeger, can't really add anything, other than he was probably captured along with Oblt. Walter Bronisch. I only say this as their names are listed together as POW in the Deutschen Verlustlisten. If you ever learn their unit, let me know. R.

Near Verdun, on 30th April 1916, there is only one french victory which seems to be the one of Lieutenant DE CHIVRE, Gilles (N.69). that day, He shot down a LVG ( crew : 2) down in flames south of Verdun. Maybe the aircraft of observer Ltn LIPPE ? I don't know.
Reference : The french air service war chronology 14-18 (F. Bailey and C. Cony).

That´s a possibility, Ludovic!
If true, then the German crew had a lot of luck in a "flamer"!

BTW I looked at the same source today and noticed I had the wrong year during the last try! :-[

Hi

I think that Adj Flachaire of Esc N 67 possible was the victor of Lt Lippe, as his 2-s was reported falling within French hold lines, and the two German flyers were made POWs...?

Also DCA claimed a German a/c South Verdun...

The French Air Service claimed a total of 31 e/a shot down destroyed(probably included DCA) in April 1916, and 9 of these fell within French lines.

Strangely The French War Chronicle seems to have more victories claimed in April 1916(and other months) than actually were claimed officially. All these x-tra victories can NOT be explained with a some late confirmations/reconfirmations in my meaning... :-/

Gunnar,

Now I noticed Vienne-le-Château - the place of Flachair´s victory - is situated 35 km west of Verdun. The term "near Verdun" could cover that.
As well POWs are recorded for his victory different to de Chivre and the victory of DCA.
Additionally Chivre´s victory is a flamer and DCA´s victory was not confirmed. So I guess the two officers POW near Vienne-le-Château could have been Lt. Herbert Lippe (o) and Oblt. Walter Bronisch (p) in an Aviatik C.I.

That's a possibility for Vienne Le Château but it seems to me too far of Verdun.
Vienne Le Château is nearest of SUIPPES or SAINTE MENEHOULD.
I think we will never know exactly.

Hi Rammjäger

It is difficult to say that the DCA claim was NOT confirmed as the French AA/Flak units were not a part of the Air Service and therefore "impossible" could have been confirmed by them...

However "if" the French DCA units did have an own confirmation procedure has so far eluded me...
