Just for the fun of it, who created the best looking fighter of WW I? Please specify your particular favorite model after you have selected a manufacturer.

ALthough I voted for Fokker (I love the DVII and the DR1), it was actually a draw between them and the SPAD XIII. I chose the Fokker(s) because I think the DVII was probably a better (easier to master?) plane than the SPAD.

Although I love the looks of the SPAD, for an Allied pilot, I think the SE5a would've been an easier plane for the average pilot to fly (and the SE5a is rather lethal-looking in it's own right).

My Gallery
I have to go with the Nieuports. They have an elegance which I think is unequaled by any other design.

The Fokker Dr1 is a close second -

As much as I love the Dva - I think it's looks are compromised by the top wing being mounted so close to the fuse - gives it a squashed appearance.
And the SE5a - lots of charm, but brutish is the word

How about ugliest?
my choice, Avro 504 - just can't abide a skinny plane

Usual disclaimer about beauty being in the eye of the beholder

I really like the Nieuport 29 (does that qualify?). I'm also a big fan of the Roland C.II, whose beauty did not diminish as the war went on. (The old pilots will break into song any moment now...)

As for ugliest, my heart (and my vote) goes to the Maurice Farman MF.11 "Shorthorn". This machine resembles nothing so much as a Victorian bathtub caught in an explosion at a baling-wire factory. Every time I see the example at the National Aviation Museum, my heart catches in my throat. (I really am being sentimental today.)

Avro 504, that is a pretty good choice for ugliest. It's not the long skinny fuse that turns me off, but that goofy looking skid on the landing gear.

Siemens-Schuckert(sp?) D.IV, that's definitely an ugly fighter candidate, that stubby barrel of a fuse ending in the awful square-topped rudder is just nasty!

I think the all time ugliest fighter that actually made it into production was the Sopwith Dolphin.

If we can count fighters that never made it into production, the Austin-Ball A.F.B.1 has to be high on the list of ugliest.

This is a damn tough one Rex. :P

There are so many nice looking aircraft in WW1.The SPAD 13 ( especially with Hat in the ring logo on it ) and all the British two seaters look good.German aircraft often had ugly painting. The colours were too fierce.I prefer the camouflage painting the Americans had.
