I remember a while back a thread where intentional rams came up and Barrett(i think) said there was a few instances. Plus I think he called em a Fox-4 hehe.

Anyway anyone remember(or know) any examples?

As you know, this was very common with the Japanese pilots in 1945. I recall reading of a Frenchman who rammed a German plane early in the war, with fatal results for both planes. Dont remember the names or source; I'll see if I can find it and will pass it on if so.

I think Kory was reffering to WW1 only? i cant recall any myself, but on the Russian side in WW2 they were called a taran. ramming attack used quite alot in the early stages of the conflict. ww1 goes, id say possibly taking out the tail feather with the prop? i d say it would be a fool hardy proposition, with out a parachute. regards, Ron </a>

Two Russian WWI pilots were given credits for victories achieved by ramming the enemy. Alexander Alexandrovich Kozakov's first victory is listed as a ramming but he was actually trying to ensnare the enemy Albatros 2-seater with a grappling hook. The cable had gotten entangled so Kozakov intentionally struck the enemy with his landing gear in attempting to disengage. Both planes went down. Kozakov was flying a Morane G.

The second pilot was Petr Nikolaevich Nesterov. In an apparant excess of patriotism Nesterov, flying a Morane-Saulnier G, rammed an Austrian 2-seater Albatros. Nobody survived. Nesterov was awarded the Order of Saint George, Fourth Class for his sacrifice.

On 10 October 1918 Lt Wilbur White of 147th Aero deliberately rammed Lt Wilhelm Kolbach of Jasta 10 who was chasing one of Whites pilots.

Lt Kolbach had a parachute.

Ref. Nesterov: wow, what did you have to do to get the Order of St. George THIRD class, let alone FIRST class? Oy vay!
WW II ramming: a French Spitfire pilot, either out of ammo or with jammed guns (damn 20mms anyway) rammed a V-1 that probably would have dived into a populated area. The greatest statement on Soviet "taran" tactics came from no less an authority than Col. Alexsandr Pokryshkin who, when asked why he hadn't rammed any Fascist Airplanes, replied, "I never ran out of ammunition."

I think the Pour le mérite-candidate Baldamus was intentionally rammed by his last French victim. One source claims Baldamus shot the French airplane in flames but was rammed from below (!) by the burning Frenchman. If this action was intentional than Baldamus was one of the most popular victims of a ramming attack in WWI.

VBR

"Rammjäger"
("Sonderlehrgang Elbe", 17.4.1945).
