I have followed with great interest the threads on this forum concerning RAF/RNAS/RFC scoring, and on a hunch I did a quick check through ATT of the Canadian aces and their "captured" totals. It would seem that of any of the categories, this would be the one where the German flyers would be identified if they were POWs. After all they and their aircraft were in Allied hands! However, less than half of the victories name the defeated pilots. Therefore this should show once more that just because an Allied pilot's victim is not identified doesn't mean that the victory didn't take place.

There is no 1:1 corresponance with victory and victim. To me a victory is the destruction &/ capture of an enemy AIRCRAFT regardless of what happens to the pilot. ie. plane crashes plane is a write off but pilot walks away victory but no victim. I suspect the captured category to be the most accurate but it may also include plane crash lands , troops kill pilot or pilot dies of injuries etc...(a few other scenarios Pilot lands in nomansland escapes to enemy trenches friendly tommies takes out aircraft to frinendly trenches vicoty yes/victim no/capture no). There are numerous types of situations possibly when evaluating victories vs claims and all have to be taken into consideration. The Jasta diaries should be the starting point to determine German planes lost, which type, where, how, flown by whom ever, then other seconadary record sources should be looked at.

What's "ATT" mean? If you're refering to capturing Imperial Walkers, those are AT-ATs, not ATTs.

** ATT is Forum shorthand for the Grub St. ("GOGS") volume Above the Trenches, part of an indispensable series, astutely and perceptively reviewed on this site.** Others include OTL (Above the Lines) and TJP (The Jasta Pilots).

** There was some erratic definition of "captured" among the Brits--I read somewhere that Voss' Triplane was listed as "captured" when it was actually destroyed in the crash.** Evidently some crunched flugezeuge were even given "G" numbers denoting captured German equpment.
