I have come across two instruments, a voltmeter and an ampmeter in identical pocket watch cases. There is a metal point on the bottom and the intent is obviously that you hang these "watches" on an instrument panel and plug the wire coming out of the "winding stem" into an instrument panel. This reminds me strongly of the way Sopwith Camel pilots hung their pocket watches on the control panel in a prepared pocket. Has anyone ever heard of early planes (or cars) with such an arrangement? Thank you. (I can submit photos if anyone wants to see this).

Hi,

Don't know about cars and planes, but I know these were common use on the U-boats. A good friend of mine has an original one of the German UB-20, made in copper. This particular type he has was kept in the ammo room and it was part of the equipment of the Pelorus (device used to aim torpedo's while being on the surface). This type would be a little bit to long to be able to fit into a pocketwatches box.
Hope this helps a little.

I have attached a small photo to an email and sent it directly to you because most forms like this one do not like html/attachments. Thank you for your interest.
