Who were the main German aces on the eastern front? I notice all the top German aces were 'westerners', in sharp contrast with WW2. Were there too few Russian aircraft to shoot down? Did the revolution and Russia's defeat come too soon in the burgeoning careers of the wouldbe eastern fighter aces? Did they enjoy a marked air superiority?

The biggest problem in the East was the relative paucity of aircraft.

Fewer aircraft covered a much larger area, so the opportunities for scoring were also consequently lower.

The highest scoring Russian (Kazakov) had 20 kills, so this gives you an idea of the circumstances.

Sorry Dan-San, but Averes, Nagler, Knappe ... didn't score as much on the Eastern front. Nagler and Knappe had only one kill each in Russia before being changing on the Western front.
The most German kills in Russia (10) were achieved by Leopold Anslinger who flew with Feldfliegerabteilung 54 - later renamed Fliegerabteilung 24 with the Südarmee. Some of his scores where on a two-seater, however. He and Hans Pippart (single-seater command of Fliegerabteilung (A) 220 where to must successful fighter pilots against the Russians although the most of there victims (6) were "only" balloons.
On the Romanian front (1916-18) the German top-scorer was Paul Guthoff (Fliegerabteilung 42) with 4 kills (all Balloons. Number One on the Mazedonian front the well known Gerhard Fieseler.
