Haloo all. I want to build a model of Ni-17 from Eduard Profipack kit a and I like Nungesser marking on Ni-17 with s.n. 1895 on tail. But I also saw picture Nungessers Ni-17bis with the same s.n.1895. What is true? Can anybody help me?

It seems that Charles considered that SFA Number ( 1895) Lucky. He used that number on a undisclosed number of aeroplanes including 23s, 24s,and 25s.
It is hard to know how many aeroplanes he actually flew because of this.

Windsock Datafile Special on Nieuport Fighters (Vol.1, page 28) includes a picture of Nungesser's camouflaged Ni.17, serialled N1480, a nice variation from those usual alluminium Ni.17s. The same picture caption mentions another of his Ni.17s, serialled N1420.
Ray Rimell's profile of the former machine is on page 16 of the same publication, but is shown as N1490 (?!).
Hope this can be of some interest.

You're right. I saw both 17 and 17bis in Squadron/Signal "Nieport fighters in action". They both carry the same number but I don't know why. Was he supersticious? Experts??

Norman Franks wrote in "Nieuport Aces of WWI" (page 94) refering to the Nieuport 17 profile:

"He (Nungesser - HT) seemd to have an affinity with this number, perhaps even a strong superstition, for he also had this serial applied to to several other Nieuports, including a 17(bis), a 24, a 24(bis) and a 25. Just how this was allowed remains unknown, or perhaps it shows authority allowed its top aces to do anything."
