I`m webmaster of site named "Take off high" in South Korea. I`m preparing for the history timeline menu of WWI aviation for my homepage.
I can`t get any information for the number of jasta members. So Would you let me know how many planes & pilots were in one jasta.
P.S : Sorry, I`m bad at English

this varied in both time and circumstances. The first two Jastas of Zander and Boelcke were fitted with 10 or 12 pilots, flying a variety of plane types. Rarely were all planes in the air together, if ever. At some point in 1917, the Germans tried to increase the number of planes up to the 15 - 18 range, but attrition eventually caught up with them.
On a related note, some might tell you that the number of planes and pilots in the Jasta attacked by Bishop in June 1917 numbered zero, but I wont go there.

Shim:
The established strength of a Jagdstaffel was:
14 pilots including the Jastafuhrer(leader).
14 single seat, single engine armed aircraft, plus 4 spares.
While this alloted strength was met for all Jasta established and maintained about to 1July 1917.
With the developement of the "America Program" in June 1917 the authorized strength began to decline to about 12 pilots and aircraft with the establishment of the new Jasta 40 to 80. By mid 1918 the Jasta strength was 10-12 pilots and airplanes. The cause for this decline was brought about by the failure of the aircraft and engine factories to meet the production schedules to meet the demands of the "America Program" of doubling the number of Jasta as well as the losses from all causes at the front. The established strength of a Jasta was still 14 pilots and aircraft at the end of the war. It was planned by the Commanding General of the German Air Force to in crease the strength of the Jasta to 15 pilots and planes in 1919.

And again: The Dienstanweisung for the Jasta-strength (31. August 1916) shows 14 airplanes but only 12 Flugzeugführer (pilots), 1 O.z.b.V. (Officer for special duties who was often NOT a pilot) and 1 Jasta-Führer (squadron leader).
Recently we had another thread discussing the Jasta-strength. Look there.

I read some where, I can't remember off the top of my head, that Jasta 1 existed only on paper. Is this true?

Paul,
DSA could probably give more specifics, but Jasta 1 did exist. altho, Jasta Zander is new to me for a title!
Zander was the first CO of it when it was formed in 22 Aug 1916, and had a fairly sucessful career on the western and Italian fronts.
Several notable pilots flew with Jasta 1 at one time or another. von Barkenow, Doring, Kurt Wintgens.
The jasta pilots, Above the Lines. from Grub street pubs.
vbr,
Ron

Paul;
Like Ron, I have never seen the term Jasta Zander. It was knowing that he was the first Jastafuhrer.

I've made a study on German aviation during 1914-18 and I found that most Jasta's didn't have the 12 or 1' pilots. Because of shortage of good pilots most Jastas consisted only of 6 or more pilots.
