Well, for starters, he served with the Signals Troop, 1st Light Horse, in the Australian Imperial Forces during the First World War.
You don't say what the medal is, but it is most likely:
a. The 1914-15 Star (bronze star with 4 points, named on the back) - for entry into a war zone in 1914 or 1915 - if it is this he will be entitled to the other two as well.
b. British War Medal (silver medal, with a man on horseback on the reverse, named on the rim)
c. Victory Medal (gilded bronze, with a Victory [looks like an angel]on the front, named on the edge)
Some of our Australian members can advise you how to get service record information, probably through the Australian War Memorial.
Good Luck!
