Researching Aviator Wolfgang von Gronau. Born 1893. Newspaper reports during his circumnaviagtion flight in 1932 note him as "LONG DISTANCE FLYER AND GREAT WAR ACE." I'm stumped. After reviews of your roster for German/other Aces, no such listing found. Did I miss something? Please share any leads you may have so that I can complete my research. Also if you have any related materials on the 1932 Expedition, please reply. In advance, thank you for your assistance.

Best regards, Mark Dodge - USA

I ´ve already heard the name von Gronau but can´t tell you something immideatly without files. The use of the word "ace" is here not refering to the Anglo-American standard of 5 kills for a fighter ace.

Gronau is maybe simply a successful war pilot OR observer/gunner belonging to the majority of men serving in Feldflieger- or Flieger-Abteilungen.

Did not find WWI-info about Wolfgang von Gronau until now but later he was the German "Luftattaché" in Tokyo and collected valuable info about the Soviet Air Force in the Far East.
This information was ignored like others by the Nazi leaders. That was leading into a complete underestimation of the Soviet Military Power before the attack in 1941.

Wolfgang von Gronau is in the Marinekalender of
German Naval Officers during WW1.
Here some short facts:
Born 25/2 1893
He was comissioned Oblt zS on 26/4 1917.
Mar 1915 Seeflg St Norderney(training).
May 1915 Seeglg St Borkum,Pilot
Nov 1915 Comander of the Hschff "Answald"
Jan 1916 Vers.kdo in Warnemunde
Nov 1916 II Seeflg. Abt. As I adj
Nov 1917 Stab of the Flg.kom of Hochstrkfke, I Adj
until EOW.
Because most of material of the German Marine flyers exist, you can probably get more info of
career in WW1.
He did not have any victories in the official Marine victory list from 1 April 1918 and serving the last 2 Years as an Adjutant he probably did not score.
Regards Gunnar
