Love this Aero Club Medal
This bellicose looking bauble, sculpted by Morlon, was only given out during the war, and shows Gallia with her javelin supporting a Nieuport Bebe in flight above Reims cathedral. The cathedral had a rough time of it in both wars. During an artillery duel in September 1914 the roof was set ablaze, and liquid lead from the structure poured out of its gargoyles' mouths, which looks like pissing off Gallia no end!
This medal to Ortoli was awarded for his second kill, an LVG on 4 June 1916, made while adjutant of N31.
