Did he carry it as a personal weapon to defend himself after a forced landing? I don't know, but in those days, when every pound "counted", a pistol would have been the more logic choice.
But that is just a guess, since I've seen some pictures, where 2-seater crews carried rifles/carabines with them...
So the story may be true (or not)...
