Captured Ottoman Bristol Scouts
Although no Bristol Scouts fell into German hands on the Western Front at least one or possibly as many as three fell into the hands of the Ottoman Air Service (or the Germans serving in it).
In a thread dating back to 07/Mar/07 ‘BU Scout’ Yavor D posted -
‘The 3 planes in possession of the Ottoman armed forces were confiscated (e)nemy planes. The former was forced to land due to groung fire in the Dardanelles region on February 17, 1917 and the latter two were also forced to land due to ground fire in the Iraqi Front on January 11 and January 23 1917.’
I believe that the one forced to land through ground fire in the Dardanelles region on 17/Feb/17 was Bristol Scout D 8996, flown by Flight Sub Lieutenant G T Bysshe elsewhere attributed to Ltn Emil Meineke and on which he was photographed. However, is anything known about the two lost in Mesopotamia (Iraq) on January 11 and January 23 both possibly from 30 Sqn. RFC.
