Hippert/Mimmi/Julie at Dawn Patrol 2022

Went to my first Dawn Patrol last Friday and Saturday. I went with Julianne, my wife for the first time to a WWI event since Frank Ryder's event back in 1992. Julie/Hippert/Mimmi the plane was a big hit. So was Julianne my wife. Great to see the plane fly over the air force museum. Dewey Davenport and Andrew King took turns flying the plane. They also took turns fixing the plane during those two days.
There were reenactors there on both days. Germans, French, British, and Americans. At one point a group of Nuns strode by. Turns out they were not reenactors but Carmelite Nuns whos founder is the patron saint of aviators. They gave Dewey a holy card that came in handy later in the day.
The first repair happened on Friday as one of the bungees came loose. The guys had to take the fairing/wing off of the axle. It drew a lot of attention from the crowd. Andrew and Dewey are true barnstormers! The next day while Dewey was flying a return oil hose from one of the scavenge pumps came loose and Dewey quickly landed the plane. After taking off some cowling panels and cleaning up the oil than refilling oil tank and tightening the hose clamp the guys were back at it flying again.
The plane was a huge hit with the crowd. We parked it so people could get close to the plane and even look inside the cockpit. I met a bunch of famous WWI replica people at the event.
I want to give a big shout out to both Dewey and Andrew for all their help this summer getting the plane flying. Their expertise made the plane fly as well as it looks. Next project is getting a new prop to maximize the GQ30. We are also planning on changing out the rubber oil lines out for AN hose fitting and lines.

I live just south of Dayton, and so wanted to attend the event this year. However, I was unable to make it this year. Hopefully, in the future there will be another opportunity. I am just another enthusiast that just likes WWI aircraft! So while I don't fly, or into the reenactment part of things, I still wish I could have seen the planes fly!
