Does anyone have this book - is it any good?

Hello,

I stumbled across this book:

FLYING ACES 1914-1918 / THE MOST SUCCESSFUL AVIATORS OF THE AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN MONARCHY AND THEIR EQUIPMENT (see attachment)

It looks impressive and was just wondering if anyone can provide a review on it.

Cheers!
Mike

OK - I decided to go ahead and purchase this book (I got it for $35 but it would easily be worth double that). The book is published by MoD Zrinyi Mapping and Communications stationed in Budapest. It was recently translated into English and the book is jammed full of information. In addition to bios of all Austro-Hungarian aces the book provides victory lists that break down each ace's victory by date, location, squadron, aircraft flown, enemy aircraft and crew (if known), source of victory confirmation, and any additional comments. The book describes all squadrons and their unit insignia. All aircraft types are covered, both those flown by Austro-Hungary and Italy (to include engines) and are illustrated with color profiles. Then armaments are described in detail (to include sights, ammunition, interrupter gear, etc.) How pilots utilized deflection shooting is described using verbiage and charts. Uniforms are then covered along with all associated badges. Paintings are scattered throughout the book. I could go on, but to say the least, I highly recommend this book. The only weakness I can note is that it only covers the Italian Front....there is not much discussion on the other fronts, say the Russian Front. Cheers!

Bonjour mdfox

I agree with you. Flying Aces 1914-1918 is an excellent book. With every reference to the text I appreciate the information found, the writing and the quality of printing and production.
I recommend the book to anyone with an interest in Austro-Hungarian aviation specifically and aces in general.

Salut!
Kirk
