Wing warning markings on Albatros D5

I am trying to locate where the marking "Nicht betreten!" is located on Albatros DV and DVa wings. I need to find the correct placement on my 1/3 scale JW aircraft. Thanks

Can’t help with positioning but I am curious about the wording which, I believe, translates into ‘no entry’. Is this correct?

Regard
John

Arrow 'nicht betreten!'

.
The German term "Nicht betreten!" in this case simply means "Do not step (on)!".

It gives no further explanation, but in this case the surface or structure is not suitable for carrying (heavy) loads. (Modern) pictograms were not used very much in those times. Their widespread use started shortly before WW2.

Some Albatros D's have painted it on front of the under wing, near fuselage. It was written because mechanics during making maintenance near engine use under wing as a step (like it was possible at other early aircraft). Albatros don't have step place at this point.
Sorry don't have picture at this moment.

Dear highflyer2,

you built a beautiful and impressive model, congratulations!
As you are asking for the correct placement of the "Nicht betreten" marking you obviously care about accuracy.

The chosen markings of Walter Böning represent common wisdom and what is usually depicted in profiles. Unfortunately this seems to be a mix-up of two different aircraft flown by Böning at different times.

There is the well known photo of Böning and D.V 2092/17 which shows a black letter "B" on his customary white and blue fuselage band. According to what Walter Böning told historian Bruno Schmäling the "B" on the fuselage side was only used when in Jasta 19 but he didn't have it on his aircraft as squadron leader of Jasta 76b. The pilot's initial on the fuselage side and a dark painted (black?) rudder were Jasta 19's squadron markings at the time.

In Jasta 76b Böning established the blue tailplane/elevator with white stripes as the squadron marking but dispensed with the letter "B" on his plane. D.Va 5765/17 has been recorded as the serial number and this aircraft initially had the usual shellaced fuselage and probably a white or linen rudder (not overpainted blue).

Later on Böning had the fuselage, fin (obliterating the serial) and rudder overpainted in a single opaque color to aid recognition in the air. This is what this aircraft looks like in the photos showing all the Jasta 76b pilots in front of the squadron line-up (note the overpainted serial in those photos).

A couple of years ago I have been told what this color was but cannot disclose it here. On the other hand Bruno Schmäling announced the publication of a book on Jasta 76b which is likely to happen yet this year (info to be found in his "Jasta Colors"-book).
Everybody with an interest in this squadron can look forward to this new publication.

Since your model is a D.V the correct markings would be achieved by overpainting the tailplane in standard camouflage green/mauve with pale blue underneath, and the rudder in black thereby representing Bönings Jasta 19 aircraft.

Have fun building and flying!
