I have recently purchased the excellent Jasta Colors Volume 1 by Bruno Schmäling. In it, I noticed that the author cast doubts over whether Ltn.d.Res.
Otto Kissenberth had scored a victory whilst flying captured Camel B7184. He notes that a number of the pilots he had interviewed from Jasta 23b had pointed out to him the restrictions placed on the flying of captured allied planes.
Thus usually special permission had to be attained to fly them and their use was restricted to the vicinity of the unit's base whilst accompanied by German planes and following notification having been given to local AA units.
This being so was it common practice for a Jasta in possession of a captured plane to give the opportunity for all its pilots to gain flight experience in the plane before sending it on to Training units or allocation for possible personal use. Also, would this possible use of the planes explain why some were remarked in crosses whilst others remained in allied markings?
