Udet's Flying Helmet Style?

Although I have seen this style of flying helmet in other photos, it seems like Udet really liked it. My question is, what is the purpose of fur flap that stretches across his forehead? Is it sometimes folded down as a visor? Did it provide additional warmth? In what situation and how would it be used?
