Can't recall exactly where or when, but I saw it as an abbreviation for "Station Aeronautique", or "air base".

All I can say...

... is, that the
"Service technique de l'aéronautique" (STAé)
had the following functions:

It seems that it was more a facility for testing and surveillance of quality than a (simple) airfield...
