What Albatros C version?

Hello all,
Here is a photograph of Carl August von Schoenebeck — 8 victory Ace. I thought he was leaning against the lower wing of an Albatros C.III, but no, the C.III does not have a spinner.

A C.IV perhaps? No, C.IVs do not have the radiator in front of the upper wing. A Rumpler of some sort? Nah says I, the Rumpler’s semicircular radiator rules them out.

Back to Albatros… I’d say either the C.XIV two-seater fighter version or the C.XV, as they both have the high radiator.

von Shoenebeck trained with FEA 3, and flew with FEA 3, before joining Jasta 11, in July 1917. The plane must belong to one or the other, but I don’t know what planes were in use with FEA 3 or FEA 3.

I am not familiar with this type, do you chaps have an opinion?

Greetings,
Leslie.

Hi Leslie,

This is the second time in as many weeks as I've been able to say "It's a DFW C.V", the most ubiquitous of all German C-types.

Guten Tag Josef,

A big thank you from me. I did check other types, but thought the DFW always had the engine covered. ‘Presumption, the mother of all mess ups.’ A DFW is the subject of one of my favourite photographs from WWI… but as you see, the nose is not included.

Now I am a little bit wiser than I was this morning!

Thank you again,
Leslie.
