Well, I happen to own the whole Aces High reprint and happen to enjoy them. Though I must confess to feeling cheated that McCudden's VC winning exploits were captured in four panels--but then again these stories were for kids-- and they had severe space limitations imposed on them. Yet the mastery over their form is clearly apparent. However, why is there a 'baron' in ever story--and why is that these evil huns are the only people who fight with a lick of sense in their heads-- as though catching your opponent off guard was some how unacceptable? Maybe kids should be told that 4 of 5 pilots sent down in a ball of fire had no idea what happened-- rare is the day when a person can emulate Werner Voss' dying actions (he did DIE folks) but then again everybody likes to hear about how Barker earned his VC--so, well, there you have it... all the same, I'm really glad they reprinted them. Since I want to make comics that deal with similar themes, it's great to see what others have done in days of yore-- have you read some of the interviews with George Evans? Those were very amusing, especially when he had to convince his editor that rotary engines were not being portrayed properly in the magazines...
so, there is at least one other EC fan out there--
