Doppeldecker C 666

Hi all,

I just finished reading this little book in German, published by Scherl in Berlin, no date given but apparently printed in 1916. This version of 111 pages has no pictures. But it is an excellent account of Oberleutnant Heydemarck's flights as an observer over the western front. But where exactly? An old post on this forum seems to say that Heydemarck's writing was subject to censorship which could explain the numerous fictitious place names in the text. Does anyone know where the FFA 17 was stationed in 1915/16? Having read the book, has anyone worked out what the real name of the River "Avrelle" for instance is, perhaps the River Marne? The book would have so much more to tell if one could identify the places overflown.

Cheers,

Geoff

The follow-up volume - FLYING SECTION 17 - gives names of places, people and 32 illustrations: assigned to Attigny (10 miles east of Rethel in the French Ardennes' department, close to the Aisne river) where the section stayed at least until Heydemarck's departure to Macedonia in December 1916.

Thank you very much, Pedro! Looks like I'll have to get hold of FLYING SECTION 17 for a better picture of what happened where.

Cheers,

Geoff
