White rimmed cockade parts on B6313?

Wingnut Wings offers an option for white rimmed cockade parts for the lower wing ailerons of Barker's Camel B6313. I guess the interpretation is based on this photo. Do you folks buy it? I think the interpretation is wrong.

Yours Mikko

I think most readers of this Forum with any interest in markings could immediately confirm that the cockades on the lower wing surfaces were not outlined in white. I think that I may have once seen a photo which was an odd exception, perhaps a personal touch added by the pilot.

While others with an interest in how nuanced these things can be might "...immediately confirm that the cockades on the lower wing surfaces were..." sometimes outlined in white on Sopwith Camels (and many other British aircraft), depending on the manufacturer and production batch.

Compare the photos of Barker's B6313 in Chaz Bower's "Sopwith Camel - King of Combat" on pages 55 (28 Squadron with original "no outline" aileron cockade) and 58 (139 Squadron with replacement "white outline" aileron).

Camel wings and ailerons were quite often swapped around between different aircraft (photos obviously does not show Barker's B6313)...

A few other examples of white outlines applied at the manufacturer's whim...

I stand corrected. I remembered once flipping through a number of books trying to find a cockade outlined in white on the lower wings, without success. I shrugged my shoulders and said to myself, "Well, I guess it was just standard practice to not outline the lower wing cockades in white." Obviously my search wasn't exhaustive enough. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

I do not have the book, but I believe you. Photos printed in books are usually clearer than odd internet pics (Kagero books are an exception!). So I will use the white lined cockade part decal at least for the port side aileron!

Thanks!

Hi Mikko,

White outline depend to the producer and production batch. Barker Camel was taken from west front and before arrival in Italy was repaired. Some parts was added as cannibalism from other machines. It is seen at picture which you added: front roundel without the white outline and aileron roundel part with it. So Wingnut Wings make good printing all versions. Modeller just must choose version and cut proper roundel fragments...
