Russian Aviation Colours

Romani mentioned a couple of books on Russian WWI aviation colors that are being offered at an 80% discount (from £40 to £7.99 each). I was slow to notice the post, because it was in the "Camouflage and Markings" section. I would have seen it sooner had it been in the "Books" section. So I'm reposting the information he provided for others who might be interested.

The title is "Russian Aviation Colours, 1909-1922" (Volume I and Volume II) by Marat Khairulin and Boris Stepanov. The links Romani provided are:

https://www.naval-military-press.com...-and-markings/

and

https://www.naval-military-press.com...-and-markings/

I ordered both, and the total with shipping to the USA for the two volumes was £24.83 ($34.69). For two hard back books totalling 440 pages with rare photographs and color illustrations, that's a real good deal!

Having worked/shared with Marat for many years I can and do fully endorse the quality of research and material presented, these volumes are invaluable as reference and insight into the Imperial Russian Air Service (Императорскiй военно-воздушный флотъ). Just saying... nuff said...

Thanks, Carl. Naval and Military Press has been running some great sales on WWI aviation titles recently. Even with shipping to the US from UK, the deals are definitely worth exploring. Some are packaged reprints, but some are original titles.

Here's a repost of what I've written in the "Camouflage and Markings" section:

I've received my copies of Volumes 1 and 2. They're just full of unpublished photographs and beautiful color profiles.

It will be a while before I have time to read the books (I have a very long list of other books I need to read first), but I did notice an odd mistake while looking through Volume 2. It occurs in a section concerning the "Grenadier Corps Aviation Otryad" during the Battle of Kovel beginning in late July of 1916. It is stated on p. 20:

"It was there that, on the orders of the German High Command, Jagdgeschwader 2, a big air formation combining six fully-fledged Jastas, was transferred directly from the battle of Verdun."

The authors may have confused their terms, or perhaps it was an error on the part of the translator, Wojtek Matusiak. In any event, it should have been "Kampfgeschwader 2" and "Kastas". The translation could have used a little polishing here and there, but that's the only big mistake I've noticed.

This shouldn't dissuade anyone from buying the books. From the detailed appearance of the rare information presented in the text, I'm sure the authors know their stuff. And the wealth of visual material alone makes these books well worth the price.
