Question Rudolf Windisch Air to Air Victories...

.
"Gentlemen,
I remember reading somewhere in one of the "Over The Front" magazines, a person commented that Leutnant Rudolf Windisch's 20+ WWI air-to-air victories didn't matched up to known Allied losses over the Western Front. How serious was Windisch's victories being disputed? I read that most of his victories were disputed.
Edward L. Hsiao"

This is the original question. The asking person seems to be quite sceptic although the reasons for that are not very specific (except for mentioning "Over the Front" on one occasion).

I checked "The Jasta War Chronology" and just found out that only a few victories are directly connected with a specific aircraft or crew of the enemy.

But that is neither a proof for overclaiming or disputed victories, nor is it a proof for a "definite aerial victory". Windisch also destroyed two balloons - at least a confirmation from the German side for these victories must have been very easy to get, since it happened close to the German lines.

Any ideas?

.

As a general statement, I think there seems to be a concerted effort on some forums, particularly 12 o'clock high, to try and discredit the claims of German airmen in both conflicts. It seems that victory scores are being viewed with a new skepticism, although I haven't seen this scrutiny applied to Allied claims.

Windisch was a brave fellow. To answer part of that question, one of the aircraft he flew during that early Jan 1918 timeframe, was a captured Spad VII of Spa 65. Photos show that it was overpainted a dark color, but the dragon insignia of Spa 65 was preserved and outlined around. The Over The Front article has a few photos of this aircraft thanks to Manfred Thiemeyer, Hermann Nied, and the able author, Hannes Täger who was able to obtain copies of Windisch photos from Saxon archives.
