100 years ago today (catching up) - 4 September 1917

TUESDAY, 4 SEPTEMBER 1917

General Headquarters, September 5th.

“Last night enemy aeroplanes again dropped bombs at different places behind our lines. A few casualties were caused in one of our hospital areas and some damage done to civilian property. There was no damage of military importance. One of the enemy's raiding machines was brought down by our fire and destroyed. Our aeroplanes have continued bombing operations actively by day and night. Yesterday great activity in the air prevailed on both sides. Our military machines and balloons worked all day in' co-operation with our artillery. In spite of vigorous attacks from hostile aeroplanes, a record number of aerial photos, were taken by us, many of them at great distances behind the enemy's lines. Though the enemy's aeroplanes showed themselves disinclined to meet our fighting machines unless well east of the line, five hostile machines were brought down in combat, and nine others driven down out of control. Seven of our machines are missing.”

General Headquarters, September 6th.

“The following details are now available concerning the bombing operations carried out by our aeroplanes on the 4th inst.:—

“During the day 24 bombs were dropped on enemy's billets at Hantay, east of Lens, and 30 on billets at Lauwin-Planque, in the same area. Five bombs were dropped on Audenarde railway junction, and seven on Audigny-au-Bac ammunition dump and station of Cambrai. Eight bombs were dropped on Carnieres aerodrome, east of Cambrai, and 61 on various other targets.”

A two-seater EA landed in the Third Army area on the night of the 3rd/4th, and another landed in the Fourth Army area on the beach. The passengers in the first machine were captured, and those in the second apparently escaped.

Artillery Co-operation – 100 hostile batteries were successfully engaged with aeroplane observation, and 27 by balloons.

Photography – 102 photographic flights were carried out and a record number of photographs – 1,805 – were taken.

Two photographic reconnaissances by No 2 Squadron RNAS were carried out to Ostende. Plates were exposed over the town and the coast to the Eastward as far as the Dutch Frontier. What appears to be a floating boom is being constructed from the tip of Zeebrugge Mole to south-eastward. There were the usual fighter patrols over Fleet, and offensive sweep carried out by double patrols.

A night bombing raid was carried out by Nos 7 & 7A Squadrons. Eighty 112-lb, four 250-lb and nine 65-lb bombs on Bruges Docks, with many hits, causing two large fires and heavy explosions; fourteen 112-lb bombs were dropped on Ghistelles Aerodrome.

A day bombing raid was carried out by No 5 Squadron. Fourteen 65-lb and sixty-three 16-lb bombs were dropped on Bruges Docks, many direct hits being made, and bursting on or very close to four T.B.D.’s, from whom dense clouds of smoke arose – probably a smoke screen.

Enemy Aircraft - Enemy aircraft attacked our artillery machines but were less inclined than on the 3rd inst, to engage our scouts unless far east. On the night of the 3rd/4th, however, they were exceptionally active.
