Exclamation A (modern) video I’d like to see…

.
… is the work of an observer/gunner of a WW1 aircraft during flight.

Today cameras are so tiny, that you easily could fix one in such a way to the flying helmet that it shows the perspective of the observer (working with the camera or “defending” the own machine against an “enemy”). Also a small camera behind the seat of the pilot (facing backwards) or one installed in next to vertical fin (facing forwards) would give a good impression in connection with the work of a WW1 observer.
--------------------

There surely are enough “Red Baron views” – looking forward over a red cowling and a pair of Spandaus within the own point of view…

.

Hi Volker. Perhaps not exactly what you are looking for but the Great War flying museum in Ontario, Canada, uses a replica Sopwith 1-1/2 Strutter to give passengers just this perspective. It is a fascinating view, facing backward in a Scarff ring with a (fake) Lewis gun between you and a fast approaching Dr.1. There are videos of various quality on YouTube giving this perspective. Search on 'great war flying museum'.

Regards
John

Lightbulb

Also the Vintage Aviator mob in New Zealand have various on board clips.
Sorry I do not have a link but a search on U Tube for WW1 Aero videos should find quite a few interesting ones Volker.

Actually, there is a pretty good portrayal of the problems encountered by early airmen in this documentary below. The modern Red Arrow pilots take to the skies to attempt to do the tasks of WWI airmen. They find it very challenging.

At the 11:00 mark, they have a very nice sequence on taking aerial photos in a Bristol F2B showing how difficult the task actually was. The entire film is worth watching. They also have nice footage of a Currie Wot Replica Plans SE5a. It is a nice film as it shows the technical problems, their solutions and just how extraordinary these young men actually were.
