Gaskesselwagen

Something a little different.

I am looking for a photograph of a railway Gaskesselwagen [gas tank wagon] used on German airship bases to transport hydrogen from the gas plant to the sheds.
The pressurised tank was apparently sheathed in a wooden shell or box.

Arrow At least I can offer...

.
... a photo of a standard "Kesselwagen" as used by the Germans during WW1.

As far as I know, riveted tanks were the standard until the early 1920's - when welded tanks slowly replaced them - and so the ones on the photo containing "dangerous liquids" (poisonous gas) were considered to be stable enough to handle problematic goods with the needed safety. But I have no idea about the max. possible pressure in connection with the transport of gas in these tanks.

"The pressurised tank was apparently sheathed in a wooden shell or box."

Can you give me more info about that "cover"?

Gaskesselwagen

Thanks Volker ... again

I cannot provide any information about the wood cladding. The German repory just says:

Tondern Kriegstagebücher for 19 July 1918.

Two bombs fell on Tobias and penetrated the roof of the hall. One bomb fell about 30m Northeast of the hall, another one on a gasholder vehicle [rail wagon], which was pressurized to 100 atmospheres pressure, the car cover was destroyed and blast holes [?] left on the rings of the gas container without causing it to explode.
Perhaps my translation is wrong?

Nice photo - thanks

As always
Best regards
Ian

Gaskesselwagen Found

Look here to find a photo of an actual Gaskesselwagen:

You may need to put Bild 134-B2059 into the search box.

Red face I have to admit...

.
... that I've never seen the picture of such a wagon before. Thank you for sharing your information.

But when you mentioned "pressurized to 100 atmospheres pressure" it was clear to me, that it was not a wagon of the type I found. At least the guys in Tondern were lucky that the tank did not explode during this raid.
