100 years ago today - 28 July 1917

SATURDAY, 28 JULY 1917

General Headquarters, July 29th.

“Yesterday there was again great activity in the air and fighting was continuous. On the night of the 27th-28th inst. important railway stations and two hostile aerodromes were bombed by our aeroplanes, and during the day a number of other bombing raids, as well as much photographic and artillery work, were carried out by us with success. In air fighting 16 German machines were brought down, and 14 others were driven down out of control. In addition two hostile observation balloons were brought down in flames. Thirteen of our machines are missing.”

Artillery Co-operation - 128 hostile batteries were successfully engaged for destruction by artillery from aeroplane observation.

Photography – 1,022 photographs were taken during the day.

The RNAS reorted that no photographic reconnaissance was undertaken, the weather being too bad. A reconnaissance was carried out at day-break over the Barrage. There were the usual fighter patrols in the area and over the Fleet together with Anti-Submarine patrols by Seaplanes.

A night bombing raid was carried out by Handley Page machinres of No 7 Squadron RNAS; forty-two 112-lb and twelve 16-lb bombs were dropped on Brugeoise Works and an explosion caused; fifty-two 112-lb bombs were dropped on the railway lines and junctions at Thourout, Middelkerke and Ghistelles, a series of explosions being caused at the former.

Adam made two claims on this date, his 9th and 10th:

'Nieuport 1' east of Becelaere at 11:10/12:10 - perhaps Nieuport 17 B1678, 29 Sqn RFC, 2nd Lt J K Campbell (Kia)

and

'DH' Ostroosebeke at 17:55/18:55 - perhaps DH4 A7540, 57 Sqn, Capt L Minot MC (Kia) & 2nd Lt S J Leete (Kia)

So far I've not been able to locate 'Bahnhof Kruis'.

The problem with matching Godfrey in A6783 with Schrader's claim is the fact that A6783 was lost on 14 July!

C'est la vie, n'est pas?

Ottey/32 Sqn vs Schusta 30????

Hi

It is a pity we don't have a time for this loss, but I am of the opinion that this paragraph from a 1 Sqn Combat Report holds clues to the downing of Lt Ottey. It concerns Lt LF Jenkin who was part of a 6 strong 1 Sqn OP (led by Capt PF Fullard) who had already battled German 2-seaters & Albatros scouts between Comines & Wervicq at 0950 - Jenkin (who would go on to be credited with 22 victories) apparently crashed a green & black stripped Albatros. The next paragraph reads;

'At 10.05am two 2-seaters were seen 8,000 feet over Zandevoorde. Lt Jenkin attacked one Aviatik with a DH5 - EA went down in slow left hand spin and crashed near Zandevoorde.'

32 Sqn were the only DH5 squadron at this juncture and there are no 2-seater claims by any of its pilots. It rather suggests Lt Ottey was the DH5 pilot.

The Js 6 claim by Lt Stock is a red herring. This was at 1900GT and JG I KTB gives SW Deinze and concerned an air battle with six 57 Sqn DH4's - Stock claim for De Haviland. One of six paid claims for three missing DH4's!!!

My money is with the Schusta 30 crew of Uffz Sander & Gefr Scheerer who claimed a Nieuport-1 NW Polygon. They would have been acting escort for a FAA 221 machine on artillery duty. Thus two machines. Again a time for their claim would be useful.

One might see a conflict of claim type & location - Zandevoorde is about 4km south of Polygon, but then again a 1 Sqn Nieuport (2Lt Buxton) was downed NW of Polygon at Zonnebeke - but last seen being chased down by 4 Albatros scouts, which rather rules out the 2-seater Schusta 30 claim.

If I might speculate; it may be that a ring around of the front by Schusta 30, after the crews return, received news of the downed Nieuport NW Polygon and they wrote up their combat report to suit. Airmen of both sides were poor on aircraft recognition.
