I have always argued that the Carisella book is the best I've seen on solving the mystery of von Richthofen's death since it includes the statements of MANY observers who were there on 4/21/18. However, I have not had the pleasure of reading the new Franks book.

This article is good but it doesn't include anything left unconsidered by Carisella and Ryan, except for stating the obvious: that it is possible some unknown Aussie with a rifle MIGHT have done the deed.

If you knock off the richt.htm at the end, there's an index of articles. Lots of good stuff there.

this is the root dir for the whoel page of documents and memoirs :

http://www.lib.byu.edu/~rdh/wwi/

There a re a huge amount of good docs on th epage , there is a statisticl run down of the USAS in ww1 by general chief of staff , which is an excellent document , there is a diary of a gallipoli soldier and tonnes more stuff. fantastic site , more government departments should take this lead and open up their paper filing cabinets to the web.

So far the AWM is the best exponent of this , NAIL is prob next.

If someone has the ability to investigate into government documents - I would suggest Austrialian ground troops and possibly some English. There should be a file somewhere stating that Richthofen was shot in the back by one of three Austrialian soldiers, who got a little over excited about seeing a wounded German pilot standing by his plane. If you want the truth, it should be in that direction.

Cool, yet another theory is born. Al's bullet bouncing off the rock theory is still my favorite.

Brown was a nice way to cover up a stupid blunder. He made Richthofen's death not look so bad on the part of the Allies. He had to live with that story for the rest of his life. And who knows maybe it was his bullet that hit Richthofen's right arm forcing him to land.

personnally i reckon split it up between brown and the aust division. Give brown a 1/2 and the division a 1/2 and give richthofen a -900. Brown should get credit cos he chased him low over the lines and firing , the division should get credit cos every digger with a slouche within cooee of the front line shot at the red tripe , between the pair of them richthofen was bound to go down. I reckon May should get some credit too for acting as fresh meat. richthofens time had come , i think who shot him is really immaterial , between brown and the aussie division they had richthofen cornered and he wasnt going to get out alive. history says brown and the aussies got him.
