Can anyone give me a list of the Commanding Officers of 60 Squadron, and the dates they served in that position from formation of the unit until 11/11/18?

Thanks,

Vince

Well, here's some info. Dates seem to be the biggest problem for me.

Squadron 60 formed 30 April or 1 May, 1916, depending on the source.

First CO: Major F. (Ferdy) Waldron. Shot down and killed 3 July, 1916.

Then Major Smith-Barry.

Then Major E.P. Graves

Then Major A.J.L. (Jack) Scott. Arrived to take command 10 March, 1917. Left to take command of the wing on 23 July, 1917.

Then C.K. Cochrane-Patrick. Transferred to H.E. on 29 December, 1917.

Then Major B.F. (Barry) Moore. Promoted to command No. 1 Aeroplane Supply Depot at "the beginning of July, 1918".

Major James T.B. McCudden. Appointed to command, but killed in a crash on the way. Never officially part of 60 Squadron apparently.

Then C.M. Crowe. Injured in a car crash "after a few weeks" and struck off.

Then A.C. Clarke to war's end.

Hope this helps some.

From Joe Warne's serialised history of 60 Sqn in Cross & Cockade (GB) Volume 11 No 3:

Maj Francis Fitzgerald Waldron 1 May 1916 - 3 July 1916 (Kia)

Maj Robert Raymond Smith-Barry 3 July 1916 - 22 December 1916

Maj Evelyn Paget Graves 22 December 1916 - 6 March 1917 (Kia)

Maj Alan John Lance Scott MC 10 March 1917 - 11 July 1917

Maj William John Charles Kennedy-Cochran-Patrick DSO MC* 12 July 1917 - 26 December 1917

Maj B F Moore 27 December 1917 - 12 July 1918

Maj James Thomas Byford McCudden VC DSO* MC* MM killed 9 July 1918 en route to take command of squadron

Maj Cyril Marconi Crowe MC 13 July 1918 - 29 July 1918

Maj Alexander C Clarke 4 August 1918 - 4 February 1919

"Billy" Crowe was the driver of the vehicle that crashed on 2 July 1918. C E Foggin and Owen Scholte suffered injuries to which they both succumbed the following day; three other passengers in the Crossley tender were detained in hospital. At the Field General Court Martial, Maj Crowe was given a severe reprimand and lost seniority for driving a car against orders. After a month on the ground, he took command of No 85 Sqn.
